ASK US ANYTHING

Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ?

Not at all. Many people begin BJJ to get in shape. Classes are designed for beginners, and you’ll build strength, endurance, and flexibility over time.

How do promotions work?

Every academy has a different system. IBJJF provides guidance and recommendations on how this process is done best. Promotion is always based on attendance, commitment, technique progression, and especially respect.

How often should I train?

We recommend beginners start at 3 days a week minimum. On the contrary, as a competitive practitioner, we recommend 5 days a week with some days including two training sessions!

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing like a fitted t-shirt and shorts without zippers. Main rule of thumb is to wear tighter fitting clothes to avoid entanglement or skin exposure.

Is BJJ good for self-defense?

Brazilian jiu jitsu is unique to other martial arts solely because its formation was derived off the “smaller vs larger opponent” principle. In BJJ, you will learn how to take someone to the ground, establish positive control, attack extremities, maintain control without needing to cause damage but having the option if absolutely necessary. These are all key components to self defense without striking. We are proud to be the go to martial art for forces like Police Officers because the translation from mats to job is so strong and useful!

Why is BJJ good for kids?

BJJ offers structure, discipline, physical conditioning, respect, character development, and self defense techniques for kids! Even if you are not a parent looking to hit any of these points, bjj is a great place of community for kids to socialize and learn essential people skills!

How do I sign up?
